Over the years a lot of different versions of the games were released in boxes. So you could see a box like X3: Reunion version 2.0 or one without any version mentioning, which means that it probably has a 1.x version on it. This is however much easier than it looks: You can always get all version upgrades for free on our website. So it does not really make a difference which version you buy, you should always get the latest update from our Downloads section and install it, before you start the game for the first time.
Please note: Digital versions bought on online platforms (like Steam or GOG) or DVD versions (like X3: Albion Prelude or X Rebirth) bound to them will always be installed in their latest versions and patched through these platforms directly.
